A global panorama Tuberculosis is an infectious bacterial disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, mainly affecting the lungs and transmitted from person to person through respiratory droplets. Although the infection does not always cause symptoms in healthy people, when active, it can cause coughing, chest pain, weakness, weight loss and fever. Tuberculosis is currently a global health concern, with millions of deaths and new infections each year, due to factors such as drug resistance, HIV, international travel and homelessness. With a third of the world’s population infected, it is essential that healthcare professionals understand the disease and its diagnostic procedures. New research should focus on the social factors that determine TB. In this way, it is believed, Brazil will once again be able to celebrate reaching the WHO targets for the elimination of TB by 2035.
2024-09-11T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Abraão Gomes Abreu, Carolyne Almeida Sarmento, Carlos Paulo da Silva, Daniel da Conceição Nascimento, Gabriel Aguiar Moulaz, José Gabriel Palma Pereira, Glenya Gilkla da Silva Abreu, Juliana Aparecida da Silva, Larissa Hannya Campos Gazola, Leonardo de Oliveira Mussi, Letícia Cristina Barbosa Serejo, Lindsay Sandy Barbosa de Lima, Liniker Lima Luz, Lucas Boni Inácio, Juliana Oliveira de Toledo https://periodicojs.com.br/index.php/hs/article/view/2203 EVALUATION OF SANITARY HYGIENIC CONDITIONS OF REFRIGERATORS IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF PARAIPABA-CE 2024-09-17T20:14:51-03:00 Alexandra do Nascimento Souza periodicojs@gmail.com Maria Gisele Carneiro da Silva periodicojs@gmail.com Danielle Alves da Silva Rios periodicojs@gmail.com Leandro Soares Damasceno periodicojs@gmail.com Ana Gislaine Lira Magalhães de Oliveira periodicojs@gmail.com Vitória Raina Rabelo periodicojs@gmail.com Rita de Cássia Rufino de Sousa Miranda periodicojs@gmail.com Nayara Luana Guillen Pumar periodicojs@gmail.com Vania Maria de Morais periodicojs@gmail.com Cíntia Galeno Araújo periodicojs@gmail.com
The consumer increasingly associates quality food with safe food. The narrative details an internship at the Macapá Indigenous Health Support House (Casai) and at the base hub of the Manga village, located in Oiapoque, Amapá. During this internship, the resident doctor of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro-RJ had the opportunity to provide medical attention directly to indigenous communities of the villages of Amapá and northern Pará. A central aspect of the text is the importance of exchange between scientific knowledge and traditional indigenous practices. The respect demonstrated by the indigenous population and the credibility attributed to their beliefs were essential to the effectiveness of the care performed. This experience offered the resident significant learning about person -centered medicine, allowing enriching contact with different cultures and traditions. These cultures have unique visions and understandings about the process of getting sick and healing, which contributed to a broader and more integrated understanding of health care. As for the methodology, we opted for a bibliographic review by searching in Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences (Lilacs), Scientific Eletronic Library Online (Scielo) and Nursing Database (BDEF). and Discussion: It was observed that diabetes is a chronic disease that is characterized by changes in glucose metabolism, whether by poor insulin production-type 1, or by resistance to its action, as it has happened in type 2. That the performance of nursing in the care of patients with diabetes mellitus and chronic renal failure is critical, where the professional employs a systematization of nursing care ensuring the patient a whole and individualized care. It is concluded that the nursing team should act in the promotion of health and/or prevention of diseases such as diabetes and their comorbidities. Also, it was observed in this review that the actions of permanent education and orientation of patients for self-care should be intensely promoted by nurses, among this population who, because they have diabetes mellitus, are pre-discredted the risk factors for development of chronic renal failure.
2024-10-09T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Jocinete F. Nascimento periodicojs@gmail.com
Organ and tissue donation is a very important subject in our society in general. I intend to discuss what organ donation is. The importance of organ and tissue donation. About the importance of awareness. Organ or tissue donation is an act by which the living individual decides to help in the treatment of other people. Donation may be from organs (kidney, liver, heart, pancreas and lung) or tissue (cornea, skin, bones, heart valves, cartilage, bone marrow and umbilical cord blood). The donation of organs such as the kidney, part of the liver and bone marrow can be done in life. For the donation of organs of deceased persons, only after the confirmation of the diagnosis of brain death can the procedure be performed. The most common is that it happens to people who suffer some kind of accident that causes head trauma, or who are victims of a stroke (stroke) and evolved to brain death. To understand the transplantation of the organs it is necessary to emphasize that the right to separate parts of the living or dead body integrate the personality, according to the understanding of Maria Helena Diniz (2006, p.249). Most of the time, organ transplantation may be the only life expectancy or the opportunity for a fresh start to about 40,000 patients waiting in the queue for Brazil. The gesture of family members who lose a loved one and decide to donate is an act of life, altruism and generosity, as a single donor can benefit at least ten people and make the difference between life and death. Brazil has the largest public transplant system in the world, responsible for financing about 95% of transplants. It is the second country in absolute number of transplants, behind only the United States.
2024-10-09T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Jocinete F. There is a bioethical conflict between the autonomy of parents who choose not to vaccinate their children and the lack of responsibility, as citizens, to protect public health. In addition, the responsibility of health professionals to work in accordance with the principles of beneficence and non-maleficence, so that they always indicate and encourage vaccines duly endorsed by science. Respect for autonomy should be balanced with the collective good, where vaccination hesitation contributes to the resurgence of preventable diseases and generates negative impacts on public health. Objective: Discuss vaccine hesitation from the perspective of bioethics from a real case report, addressing the repercussions of doctors’ instructions to their patients. Additionally, the legal aspects related to the obligation of vaccination in Brazil are discussed, with emphasis on collective protection and ethical duty to promote public health. METHOD: This is a descriptive and qualitative study based on a real case report of meningoencephalitis resulting from chickenpox, whose searches were performed in the Scielo, PubMed and Lilacs databases. Discussion: Varicella is a disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus, whose transmission occurs through respiratory aerosols or contact with the contents of skin lesions. Its main complications are meningoencephalitis, pneumonia, skin and ear infections. Meningoencephalitis is a rare interlocutory appeal that consists of acute central nervous system inflammation and can be fatal. Vaccination against chickenpox prevents injuries resulting from this infection. According to the legislation in force in the country, the obligation to immunize through a vaccine that, registered with a health surveillance body, is part of the National Immunization Program or its obligatory application determined by law is constitutional. Addressing the precepts of principalist bioethics, the present study relates them to the reported case, aiming to broadly discuss vaccine hesitation from medical advice. CONCLUSION: The case report highlights the importance of vaccination against the varicella zoster virus in preventing serious complications and the bioethical dilemma between parents’ autonomy and the responsibility of protecting the health of children and the community. Non -immunization, as in the case of the varicella, highlights the need to prioritize the principles of beneficence and non -maleficence. Although autonomy is essential, it should be balanced with the individual and collective good, especially in vaccination, where protection depends on adherence to immunization policies. Vaccine hesitation is a growing public health problem, requiring health professionals to be well formed to combat misinformation and promote evidence -based practices.
2024-10-13T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Elizabeth Alt Parente, Carolina Genovez Vieira Caetano, Flávia Coppola Maciel Araújo, Gabriel Alvares Sathler, Gabriela Gomes Andrade Vianna, Larissa Affonso Magalhães, Marayah Fernanda Batista de Oliveira, Marina Godoy de Paula, Natália Macedo Cardoso, Talita Graça de Oliveira Mateus, Yasmin Fernandes Lopes https://periodicojs.com.br/index.php/hs/article/view/2244 RECURRENT RESUSCITATION PROCEDURES IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS 2024-10-13T17:50:10-03:00 Akemi Svaiter Tominaga periodicojs@gmail.com Ana Júlia Rodrigues Bezamat periodicojs@gmail.com Bernardo Teixeira Amarante periodicojs@gmail.com Júlia da Mata Dias Corrêa periodicojs@gmail.com Ronaldo Melo Dias Neto periodicojs@gmail.com Elizabeth Alt Parente periodicojs@gmail.com Lays Costa Silva periodicojs@gmail.com
The present study refers to a real case report, in which a bioethical analysis is developed, from the perspective of principlism, in the environment of a pediatric intensive care unit, with the objective of discussing the dysthanasia practiced in the medical setting and the decision-making of those involved in this case. However, recent studies have shown that elevated troponin levels can occur in several non-coronary conditions, requiring a more careful diagnostic approach to avoid misinterpretations and inadequate management. This study aimed to perform a systematic review of the literature on the non-coronary causes of elevated troponin levels, seeking to identify the main associated clinical conditions and discuss their prognostic value in different contexts. To this end, a systematic review of articles published between 2014 and 2024 was conducted using the PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases. The results revealed that conditions such as sepsis, pulmonary embolism (PE), chronic renal failure (CRF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and tachyarrhythmias are the main non-coronary causes of elevated troponin levels. It is concluded that elevated troponin levels of non-coronary etiology are an important marker of severity and poor prognosis in several systemic conditions. Troponin levels should be interpreted carefully, taking into account the clinical context and underlying conditions of each patient.
2024-10-22T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Marcelo Flavio Gomes Jardim Filho https://periodicojs.com.br/index.php/hs/article/view/2262 LATE ONSET PSYCHOSIS IN THE ELDERLY 2024-10-22T16:50:45-03:00 Henrique Djosci Coêlho de Sá periodicojs@gmail.com Ana Julia Milholo Robles periodicojs@gmail.com Vinicius Costa de Mello Farah periodicojs@gmail.com Lucca Fernandes Alevato periodicojs@gmail.com Paulo Víctor Elias Sobrinho periodicojs@gmail.com Paulo Andre Ramalho Rangel Lima periodicojs@gmail.com José Sérgio Martins Neto periodicojs@gmail.com Eduardo Bandeira de Mello Sanches de Almeida periodicojs@gmail.com Vitor Hugo Mendes da Cunha periodicojs@gmail.com Thiago Zanetti Pinheiro periodicojs@gmail.com Antônio Vitor Gullo de Oliveira Ribeiro periodicojs@gmail.com Luiza Tibério Campos Calegário periodicojs@gmail.com
Late-onset psychosis in the elderly is a condition characterized by the onset of psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions, after the age of 60. Although psychosis at younger ages is often associated with primary psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, diagnosis in the elderly is more complex, as it involves the need to differentiate between various conditions that can affect the brain and behavior, such as dementias, neurological disorders and factors related to brain aging. The impact of brain aging, such as diminished cognitive abilities and changes in brain structure, also plays an important role in the development and course of psychosis in this age group. The aim of this work is to analyze the differential diagnosis of late onset psychosis in the elderly, exploring the conditions that can mimic psychotic symptoms and the impact of brain aging on this process. It also aims to assess the implications of this diagnosis for clinical management and patients’ quality of life. This study uses a systematic review to investigate late onset psychosis in the elderly, its relationship with neurodegenerative diseases, differential diagnoses with dementias and therapeutic approaches, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological. The search was carried out in databases such as SciELO, PubMed, LILACS and Journal of Neurosciences, and included analysis of critical reviews, empirical studies and clinical guidelines. Additional data was obtained from population studies and clinical analyses involving geriatric patients with psychosis. The differential diagnosis of late onset psychosis is challenging, as it involves distinguishing between primary and secondary psychiatric causes. Neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies, are often associated with psychotic symptoms in the elderly. Likewise, disorders such as major depression with psychotic features and delirium can present with similar symptoms, and a detailed clinical assessment is essential. The exclusion of underlying medical factors, such as infections, metabolic disorders and adverse effects of medication, is crucial to ensure an accurate diagnosis. Brain aging, in turn, plays a key role in the vulnerability of the elderly to psychosis. With age, structural and functional changes occur in the brain, such as cortical atrophy, reduced neuronal density and alterations in dopaminergic pathways, which can predispose to the emergence of psychotic symptoms. These changes make the brain more susceptible to stress factors, inflammation and sensory deficits, which can precipitate psychotic episodes. Thus, the treatment of late onset psychosis involves a careful approach, given the sensitivity of the elderly to antipsychotics and the increased risk of side effects. The choice of treatment must balance efficacy in controlling symptoms with minimizing risks, and the use of low doses and constant monitoring are recommended to avoid complications. It is therefore concluded that late onset psychosis in the elderly presents significant diagnostic challenges, requiring a multifactorial approach that takes into account brain aging and the various medical conditions that can mimic or contribute to psychotic symptoms. Differential diagnosis is essential to ensure appropriate treatment, which, when properly targeted, can substantially improve patients’ quality of life. The impact of brain ageing on vulnerability to psychosis highlights the need for detailed clinical assessment and individualized therapeutic strategies for this population group.
2024-10-22T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Henrique Djosci Coêlho de Sá, Ana Julia Milholo Robles, Vinicius Costa de Mello Farah, Lucca Fernandes Alevato, Paulo Víctor Elias Sobrinho, Paulo Andre Ramalho Rangel Lima, José Sérgio Martins Neto, Eduardo Bandeira de Mello Sanches de Almeida, Vitor Hugo Mendes da Cunha, Thiago Zanetti Pinheiro, Antônio Vitor Gullo de Oliveira Ribeiro, Luiza Tibério Campos Calegário https://periodicojs.com.br/index.php/hs/article/view/2263 COMMUNITY INTERVENTIONS TO REDUCE MATERNAL MORTALITY IN LOW-RESOURCE AREAS 2024-10-22T16:50:42-03:00 Henrique Djosci Coêlho de Sá periodicojs@gmail.com Vinicius Costa de Mello Farah periodicojs@gmail.com Lucca Fernandes Alevato periodicojs@gmail.com José Sérgio Martins Neto periodicojs@gmail.com Paulo Víctor Elias Sobrinho periodicojs@gmail.com Paulo Andre Ramalho Rangel Lima periodicojs@gmail.com Eduardo Bandeira de Mello Sanches de Almeida periodicojs@gmail.com Vitor Hugo Mendes da Cunha periodicojs@gmail.com Bruno de Oliveira Figueiredo periodicojs@gmail.com Antônio Vitor Gullo de Oliveira Ribeiro periodicojs@gmail.com Luiza Tibério Campos Calegário periodicojs@gmail.com Thiago Zanetti Pinheiro periodicojs@gmail.com
Maternal mortality, defined as the death of women during pregnancy, childbirth or in the postpartum period, continues to be a serious public health problem, especially in low-resource areas. Factors such as limited access to quality healthcare, lack of infrastructure, shortage of qualified professionals and socio-economic inequalities contribute to high mortality rates. In many of these regions, community interventions have been key to reducing maternal mortality by providing direct assistance to pregnant women, promoting health care education and strengthening the link between communities and medical services. This study seeks to analyze community interventions implemented in low-resource areas to reduce maternal mortality, evaluating their strategies, challenges and the results obtained in improving maternal survival rates. This study is a systematic review that investigates the effectiveness of maternal health interventions in low- and middle-income countries, focusing on skilled birth attendant programs, community transport, and technological innovations. The analyses were carried out in databases such as PubMed, BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth and African Journal of Reproductive Health, using data from articles published between 2015 and 2021. Community interventions to reduce maternal mortality range from health education programs, training traditional birth attendants and strengthening maternal and child support networks. One of the main approaches involves training community health agents, who work directly in communities, providing basic prenatal care, referral to medical services in cases of risk and promoting knowledge about signs of pregnancy complications. These actions are especially important in remote areas, where access to health facilities is limited. Another key aspect of these interventions is the promotion of safe practices during childbirth and the strengthening of emergency transport systems, ensuring that pregnant women at risk can be transferred to health centers equipped to deal with complications. The introduction of simple technologies, such as clean delivery kits and essential medicines, has shown promising results in reducing infections and hemorrhages, which are primary causes of maternal mortality. Awareness campaigns also play a crucial role, educating the population about the importance of prenatal care, proper nutrition and birth assistance in controlled environments. These initiatives aim not only to improve knowledge about maternal health, but also to combat cultural and social barriers that can prevent pregnant women from seeking medical care in a timely manner. It is concluded that community interventions have proven to be an effective approach to reducing maternal mortality in low-resource areas. Training health workers, implementing safe delivery practices and raising awareness about antenatal care are strategies that have contributed significantly to improving maternal health outcomes. However, for these interventions to be sustainable and scaled up, continued public policy support, adequate funding and the integration of these actions with formal health systems are essential.
2024-10-22T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Henrique Djosci Coêlho de Sá, Vinicius Costa de Mello Farah, Lucca Fernandes Alevato, José Sérgio Martins Neto, Paulo Víctor Elias Sobrinho, Paulo Andre Ramalho Rangel Lima, Eduardo Bandeira de Mello Sanches de Almeida, Vitor Hugo Mendes da Cunha, Bruno de Oliveira Figueiredo, Antônio Vitor Gullo de Oliveira Ribeiro, Luiza Tibério Campos Calegário, Thiago Zanetti Pinheiro https://periodicojs.com.br/index.php/hs/article/view/2264 IMPACT OF ADVANCED HEMODYNAMIC MONITORING ON MYOCARDIAL REVASCULARIZATION SURGERY IN HIGH-RISK PATIENTS 2024-10-22T16:50:40-03:00 Henrique Djosci Coêlho de Sá periodicojs@gmail.com Vinicius Costa de Mello Farah periodicojs@gmail.com Lucca Fernandes Alevato periodicojs@gmail.com Thiago Zanetti Pinheiro periodicojs@gmail.com Paulo Víctor Elias Sobrinho periodicojs@gmail.com José Sérgio Martins Neto periodicojs@gmail.com Paulo Andre Ramalho Rangel Lima periodicojs@gmail.com Eduardo Bandeira de Mello Sanches de Almeida periodicojs@gmail.com Vitor Hugo Mendes da Cunha periodicojs@gmail.com Antônio Vitor Gullo de Oliveira Ribeiro periodicojs@gmail.com Luiza Tibério Campos Calegário periodicojs@gmail.com
Coronary artery bypass grafting is a critical procedure for patients with advanced coronary disease, especially those classified as high risk due to comorbidities such as heart failure, hypertension and diabetes. For time delimitation, the research considered publications between the years 2019 and 2022, a period that reflects the latest advances in hemodynamic monitoring technologies in high-risk cardiac surgeries. Advanced hemodynamic monitoring includes the use of devices such as the pulmonary artery catheter and non-invasive bioimpedance systems, which provide real-time data on cardiac output, blood pressure, oxygen saturation and systemic vascular resistance. In high-risk patients, these devices allow for precise adjustments in the administration of fluids and vasoactive drugs, promoting better hemodynamic stability. Studies indicate that this approach reduces the incidence of serious complications, such as cardiogenic shock and arrhythmias, optimizing post-operative recovery. Therefore, advanced hemodynamic monitoring is a crucial tool in CABG surgeries, especially for high-risk patients. Its implementation improves intraoperative management, reducing the risk of complications and promoting better clinical outcomes. Therefore, its use should be considered an integral part of strategies for complex cardiac surgeries.
2024-10-22T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Henrique Djosci Coêlho de Sá, Vinicius Costa de Mello Farah, Lucca Fernandes Alevato, Thiago Zanetti Pinheiro, Paulo Víctor Elias Sobrinho, José Sérgio Martins Neto, Paulo Andre Ramalho Rangel Lima, Eduardo Bandeira de Mello Sanches de Almeida, Vitor Hugo Mendes da Cunha, Antônio Vitor Gullo de Oliveira Ribeiro, Luiza Tibério Campos Calegário https://periodicojs.com.br/index.php/hs/article/view/2265 EFFECTS AND APPLICATIONS OF CRYOEXPOSURE ASSOCIATED WITH HIGH INTENSITY ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD IN HEALTH AND AESTHETICS 2024-10-22T16:50:38-03:00 Carlos Ruiz-Silva periodicojs@gmail.com Daniela Moleiro periodicojs@gmail.com Caroline R. Ruiz-Silva periodicojs@gmail.com
Obesity has emerged as a global epidemic and represents a major risk factor for numerous chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Although adopting a healthy diet and regular exercise remain the cornerstones of weight management, recent research has revealed that cold exposure and associated muscle contractions can substantially contribute to weight loss. This article presents a comprehensive review of the physiological mechanisms that link cold exposure to weight loss, with a particular focus on the induction of browning and irisin production through pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) muscle stimulation technology, which uses alternating magnetic fields based on the law of electromagnetic induction to stimulate supramaximal muscle contractions with high magnetic flux density. The growing concern and interest in physical fitness, not only from an athletic but also aesthetic point of view, has driven the search for new methods and technologies that can aid in gaining muscle mass and tone. Recent studies have reported that 81% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with their body image, even though 56% had a normal body mass index. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) muscle stimulation technology employs alternating magnetic fields based on the law of electromagnetic induction to induce supramaximal muscle contractions. PEMF generates impulses independent of brain function and at a frequency that does not allow muscle relaxation, thus characterizing tetanic contractions. Electrical currents and electromagnetism have long been used in physical therapy and rehabilitation, primarily for muscle strengthening. However, PEMF technology has emerged as a more effective and less invasive alternative for the patient, primarily intended for toning and strengthening muscle groups. In this study, we performed a comprehensive review of all available scientific articles indexed in PubMed and Web of Science over the past 20 years on this technology and its effects on skeletal muscle. We discuss the scientific evidence available from clinical studies and analyze the effects and possible mechanisms of action on muscle contraction.
2024-10-22T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Carlos Ruiz-Silva, Daniela Moleiro, Caroline R. Although usually self-limiting, it can cause significant discomfort. Triggers include infections, food allergies, and drug reactions. Management mainly involves antihistamines, with corticosteroids in more severe cases. A systematic analysis of the literature is necessary to optimize the diagnosis and treatment of acute urticaria, seeking to consolidate evidence that helps health professionals in clinical practice. This research uses the systematic literature review method, with the objective of gathering and analyzing the most relevant studies on acute urticaria in children published between 2014 and 2024. Acute urticaria presents with urtices rashes, pruritic, and angioedema alone or in association with urtices. It can be triggered by infections, food allergies, or medications, but often the cause is idiopathic. Most episodes are self-limiting, with symptoms that disappear in less than 24 hours. Educating caregivers about possible triggers and monitoring allergic reactions are key to effective treatment. Acute urticaria in children is common but often underdiagnosed. Although most cases are self-limiting, identifying triggering factors is crucial to preventing recurrences. Proper management is critical for treatment. Educating caregivers about the condition and seeking medical attention in serious situations are essential to ensure the child’s well-being.
2024-10-31T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2024 Janilson Barros de Sá, João Guilherme de Sá Santos, Vinicius Carvalho de Sá https://periodicojs.com.br/index.php/hs/article/view/2275 RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MYOCARDITIS AND DENGUE 2024-10-31T16:03:27-03:00 Rafael Melo Lopes periodicojs@gmail.com Yana Dantas Fernandes Veras periodicojs@gmail.com Janielly Zenette Alves Guedes Da Silva periodicojs@gmail.com João De Sena Bernardo periodicojs@gmail.com Marcos Paulo de Sena Rodrigues periodicojs@gmail.com Sean De Holanda Angelim Santos periodicojs@gmail.com Maria Eloisa De Castro Lima periodicojs@gmail.com Raimundo Dário Coelho Campelo periodicojs@gmail.com Orleâncio Gomes Ripardo de Azevedo periodicojs@gmail.com Raquel Gondim Moreira periodicojs@gmail.com
Introduction: Myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, can arise as a complication of dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease.
