Abstract
There are factors that contribute to healthy aging and have a protective effect against age-related declines. The lifestyle and activities practiced over the years may reflect a better aging process. Meditative mindfulness techniques are related to improving well-being and reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress. Furthermore, studies have shown that the technique is associated with improved cognition and prevention of cognitive decline. Mindfulness is closely related to the self-compassion construct, of which it is a strong predictor of psychological health. Of particular relevance to the challenges of old age, self-compassion has been associated with the ability to manage adversity and develop coping strategies. However, these approaches are still quite recent in the Brazilian context, mainly aimed at the elderly population.
