Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the knowledge about oral health of pregnant and puerperal women attended at a school hospital. Method: This is a retrospective, documentary, cross-sectional study with quantitative analysis. The sample consisted of 715 pregnant and puerperal women who were assisted and answered a semi-structured questionnaire, prepared by the researchers themselves, in the prenatal and maternity phase in a hospital, in the city of Montes Claros - MG, in the period of 2012 to 2022. Data were tabulated and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences program - SPSS version 26.0 for descriptive analyzes of absolute and relative frequency. Results: The results pointed out that most women who received guidance developed few oral problems and those who did not receive these guidelines felt pain and gingival bleeding. It was observed a high number of women claiming to have received no guidance on the oral health of their baby, and a very high percentage of pregnant and puerperal women stating that they had not received dental prenatal care. Conclusion: It was possible to infer that most of the evaluated pregnant and puerperal women have a high school level and are in their first pregnancy, most of them did not receive oral hygiene guidelines during pregnancy for her and her baby and because it they have a very low level of knowledge about their oral hygiene.
