Abstract
University Extension, which on December 18, 2018 becomes mandatory, being necessary and part of the curricular matrix of all courses, is an educational, cultural and scientific process that enables a relationship between university and society. The aim of this text, through a bibliographical review, is to show the process of change between the extension of an assistance nature to the present moment with resolution No. 7 of December 18, 2018. The bibliography points out that a long historical process was necessary for the concept of university extension could be formulated, but much still needs to be done so that extension actions fulfill their role in society. In view of this, it can be concluded that the fight for social transformation and the democratization of scientific knowledge is still far from having an end, and it is up to each subject to take an active role in this search for a fairer and more democratic world for everyone.
