Abstract
Masseter muscle hypertrophy (H.M.M.) is a condition characterized by excessive unilateral or bilateral muscle development in the mandible angle region, which can lead to aesthetic discomfort or functional. The present work aims to describe a clinical case with the use of botulinum toxin type A in the treatment of masseter muscle hypertrophy. Patient E.A.A.P.F., male, 32 years old, attended the Specialization clinic in Orofacial Harmonization at ESPEO (Pernambucana School of Dentistry) complaining of pain in the region of the masseter muscle. The proposed treatment was the application of botulinum toxin type A. In the first session, the toxin was applied in 3 points of the masseter muscle with 10 U each (30 U on each side), which gave a significant improvement to the pain picture. After 4 months, a second toxin application was made with 28U of Xeomin© on each side (distributed in 3 points in 10U, 10U and 8U). Six months after the last application, the patient presented sporadic pain and use of muscle relaxant at specific moments. Therefore, it was concluded that the application of TX A for masseter muscle hypertrophy is a more conservative treatment compared to the surgical procedure. It is an alternative treatment to reduce or eliminate drugs, but it is temporary and also. This application to toxin, associated with other techniques and treatments, enhances and improves the quality of life of patients, acting both in terms of aesthetics and functionality.
