Abstract

The present study aims, through a literature review, to point out some parameters for the application of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in endodontics, since there are many and with a high degree of variation among the several researches already done. It was conducted pubmed search, books and book references on the topic. Due to the need to develop allied techniques in the disinfection of the root canal system, photodynamic therapy emerges as a promising antimicrobial therapy to support endodontic treatment, since its nonspecific action on the microbiota can be used in several stages of endodontic treatment or even retreatment always aiming at the sanification of the ducts through the sharp reduction of resistant microorganisms, which are the main cause of failure of the endodontic treatment. In view of the innumerable results and different protocols, it is understood that attention is needed regarding the protocol used, since no specific light parameters, photosensitizers and exposure time have yet been established.
