Abstract

Objective: to describe the profile of individuals with esophageal cancer residing in Montes Claros. Method: descriptive study with a quantitative approach. Clinical and epidemiological data of individuals with esophageal cancer residing in Montes Claros, Minas Gerais were evaluated. Inclusion criteria were data available in the system and incomplete data were excluded. An analysis of the data available in the hospital records of the Instituto Nacional de Câncer José Alencar Gomes da Silva (INCA) was carried out in the most recent historical series (2015 to 2019), with a descriptive analysis of the data being performed. The study was carried out during the month of June 2022. Results: 525 patients diagnosed with esophagus were identified. Regarding the sociodemographic profile, 82.2% were male, while 17.8% were female, the most common age group was between 45 and 69 years (70.2%), the most common color was the brown 383 (72.9%). Regarding the consumption of alcoholic beverages, most of the individuals stated the use (88.1%). The combined history of tobacco or its derivatives was positive in 90.8% of the cases. Regarding the histological type, most of the cases were squamous cell carcinoma (89.5%), with the TNM staging classified in group 3 (49.7%) being the most common. Conclusion: the data indicated a positive association between esophageal cancer and alcohol and smoking habits, in mixed-race male patients aged between 45 and 69 years. Regarding the clinical profile of the individuals, cases in staging in the TNM 3 classification were identified.
