MASTECTOMY: PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL IMPLICATIONS IN WOMEN’S LIFE

Abstract

Introduction: The breasts are essential in a woman’s body, as it is a symbolic characteristic of her femininity, her self-esteem and relevant sexual function. In this aspect, breast removal is a process that influences rejection not only in women, but mainly in a social context. Based on this, the construction of this study is justified by the fact that mastectomy, although it has its treatment purposes, can affect the self-image of the female body, impair self-confidence or disapprove of their own sexuality, devalue women, embarrass them. and limiting social and sexual contact. Objective: To identify the main physical and emotional implications that mastectomy can cause in a woman’s life. Methodology: This study was carried out as part of a systematic review with the main objective of summarizing evidence from previously published studies on the subject in question. The research was carried out through searches in the PUBMED and SCIELO databases. Results and Discussions: Through a detailed analysis of the selected studies, some important points were highlighted in the literature regarding the implications that mastectomy can cause in women’s lives. In this aspect, the discussion was structured in subtopics the main points that this procedure can affect. Faced with the diagnosis of cancer and the need to perform a mastectomy, facing this reality encompasses several physical, emotional and especially psychological factors, as it is a decision that can completely change women’s well-being. At this point, psychological support is essential to bring the woman closer to the new experience, presenting the facts that she can go on with her normal life. Final Considerations: Mastectomy brings changes in the performance of daily activities, alters women’s conceptions and behaviors.
